If you ever get behind the wheel of your vehicle and notice that it won’t start, you may need a jump-start. Fortunately, jump-starting a car is a simple process. Then, if you need a battery replacement in the near or distant future, you can always schedule a service appointment at our maintenance facility near Chicago!
HOW TO JUMP-START A CAR PROPERLY
When jump-starting a car, you’ll need jumper cables and another vehicle. If you’d rather not attempt this yourself, you can always reach out to a jump-start car service like AAA. Once you have the extra car and jumper cables, here’s how you can jump-start your car:
- Make sure that the car with the good battery is parked facing the vehicle with the dead battery. The vehicle with the dead battery should be turned on, and the parking brakes on both cars need to be engaged.
- Open both hoods and locate the batteries. You may have to remove a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
- Find the positive and negative terminals on the batteries, and make they’re clean and corrosion-free.
- Connect the red clamp of the jumper cable to the positive post on the dead battery.
- Uncoiling the battery cable, hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal of the battery with the charge.
- Connect the black clamp to the negative post on the good battery.
- For the final clamp, connect it to an unpainted metal surface on your car’s frame.
- Once everything is hooked up securely, start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery first, then the one with the dead battery.
- Once the dead vehicle has been jump-started, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that they were placed on, then shut off the car that was used to jump-start the dead car.
- Keep the engine of the restarted vehicle running for at least 10 minutes to make sure that the battery doesn’t immediately die again? You can check your owner’s manual for more information on how long the car should be kept running.

ADDITIONAL BATTERY TIPS AND TRICKS
Now that you know how to jump-start a car, can a battery be too dead to jump-start?
If your vehicle doesn’t jump-start, you may need a battery replacement. Or, it could be an indicator of a much more serious issue. Here are a couple of things that you can do if your vehicle isn’t jump-starting
- If you hear a clicking sound when trying to start the car, your starter may not be working. You can contact Oak Lawn Mazda at 708-233-7704 to schedule an appointment and get a replacement.
- If the car’s electrical systems turn on, but the engine won’t turn over, it could result from an issue with the ignition switch, battery, starter, or a fuse. You’re best off bringing your car into a certified service center in the Orland Park area, so they can diagnose the issue.
- After getting the jump, be sure to keep your vehicle running for a while. This allows the battery to recharge after it’s been drained.
